Hamstring Injuries

Strains, tears, pulls….

They all mean the same thing, some injuries are significant, some you will recover in days.

The Hamstrings

Made up of 3 muscles, on the back of your upper leg:
Bicep Femoris, Semi-membranosis, Semi-tendinosis.

How do they get injured?

Several mechanisms but most commonly:
- Sprinting
- Fast Decelerations
- Over-stretching (slipping)

How bad is it?

The British Athletic Grading System is the best we currently have but an MRI is needed to attain a grade for your hamstring injury.

The MRI IS NOT ESSENTIAL in order for your injury to be successfully managed though!

What to do next?

Don’t panic, relax, try your best to not aggravate the injury in the 1-3 days post injury
(It may feel “tight” but DO NOT stretch it)

Begin early loading exercises as tolerable (walking, squatting, pool marching, bridging)

Every day you will feel a little better.
Contact your athletic therapist /physiotherapist for guidance and to establish some goals for your recovery.
